Homeschool Valentines

Christy Skousen, the ambitious :) mother of five, invited us over for a Valentine's party with a couple of other moms and their kids.  We had lunch, sandwiches from her homemade bread straight out of the oven, frosted freshly baked cookies and let the kids play. Our beautiful host did all that and nursed the baby! :) It made me tired just thinking about it all.  Thanks Christy...you really know how to throw a party!

The Beach Boys

When Spence got his Zune Pass, he downloaded all of the Beach Boys songs.  I had forgotten what a great band they are.  So I'm changing  my music in honor of the Beach Boys.  These are some of my favs. The player is at the bottom of the page if you want to turn it off.  The song that is titled "All Summer Long" is not labeled correctly.  It's actually a really cool, lesser-known Beach Boys song called, "Hushabye".

Hiking at Lyman

Edie Doubt invited us to go hiking with her at Lyman Lake since the government is claiming that they are going to close the gates to the park for good.  Lyman has been one of our favorite hiking spots during homeschool.

We hiked a trail and checked out the petroglyphs...which I forgot to take pictures of.

Then we went out to Rattlesnake point to check out the dig and ended up having a rock skipping lesson.  Hayes got a rock to skip six times by the end.

He also threw in as many large and heavy rocks as he could. Check out my action shots! :)

Thanks Edie for inviting us along.

Halftime: Hayes Jackson Platt turns 9!

Hayes turned nine a week ago.  He shares his birthday with his Grandpa Bruce.  I can't believe it's been nine years since my first baby was born.  We were living in Orem, UT while Spence went to BYU.  I was teaching school at Cedar Hills Elementary School.  Luckily he came on a Saturday.  I woke up that morning with some cramps.  I didn't think anything of them.  But later when I was talking to my mom on the phone (my parents were living in Anchorage), she asked me if the cramps kind of came and went.  I thought about it and realized that they were.  It was then that she informed me that these were contractions I was feeling.  Duh!  I had no idea.

My plan was not to go to the hospital too early, and since the hospital was only 5 minutes away, we went on with our day killing time till we really needed to go.  Around noon, Kristen and I went to Costco and while we were there, I had a few strong contractions that made me have to stop and bend over.  So when we got home, I asked Spence to go to Burger King and get us some Whoppers so that we wouldn't go to the hospital hungry.  While he was gone, my contractions were getting really painful.  Our little neighbor girl Cassidy (who ended up coming to stay with us when she was in high school) was over hanging out with Kristen and I.  Every time I had a contraction, I would turn away from her so she wouldn't see how much pain I was in.  When Spence finally showed up an hour later, he admitted that he had stopped in at the used CD store for a "moment".  Aghhh!  We scarfed down our burgers and headed to the hospital.  We got there around 6 pm and they checked me and I was already dilated to a six.  Four hours later and a bit of pushing (I say a bit because it didn't last that long I don't think, but it hurt like %@## ) out came our little Hayes Jackson at 5lbs 10 oz.  Our doctor was late...only arriving to catch him as he came out.  As he held him up, Hayes decided a little pay-back was in order and proceeded to pee right down the front of the doctor.  That's our boy!
